Blackwell Mills Canal House

The Blackwells Mills Canal House was built around 1835 as a home for the bridge-tender on the Delaware & Raritan Canal. From that time until the D&R canal closed in 1932, the bridge-tender and his family lived there and operated the swing bridge to allow vessels to navigate the canal.

Vessels on the canal transported many products, but mainly anthracite coal, between Bordentown and New Brunswick. Although there are no swing bridges along the waterway now, several of the original bridge tenders' homes still remain.

The house is owned by The State of New Jersey and is part of the D&R Canal State Park. The property has been leased by the Blackwells Mills Canal House Association.
