Somerset County Courthouse

Formally dedicated in 1909, the Somerset County Historic Courthouse is a fine example of Beaux-Arts Classicism, popular at the turn of the century. Original contract for the building, in the amount of $227,589, was awarded to the firm of Gordon, Tracy and Swartwout. One of the firm's principals, James Riely Gordon, had architectural practices in both Texas and New York, and is best known for designing public buildings, particularly courthouses.

The courthouse was restored and re-dedicated in 1996 by Somerset County and features original furnishings dating from 1907. Theodore Roosevelt campaigned from the courthouse's grand steps in 1904; and in 1927, the sensational Hall-Mills murder trial took place here, attracting national and international press coverage.
