New Cemetery

The second Victorian designed cemetery in New Jersey is an historical treasure, representing families whose names can be seen on street signs throughout the Borough such as Alva A. Clark and William V. Steele, both Congressmen. New Jersey State Supreme Court Justice Clarence Case, one of the attorneys in the Hall-Mills murder trial is buried here, as well as providing the final resting place for 190 Civil War Veterans, 19 US Civil War Colored Troops and Fred Moore Jr., who was a Tuskegee airman.

Somerville's New Cemetery is an example of a Victorian garden cemetery where the atmosphere of peaceful repose is enhanced by the lofty grandeur of ancient trees, and the rural character is retained in gravel roadways winding round a gentle rise.
