First Reformed Church, Rocky Hill

The Dutch Reformed Church of America dates back to 1628 and is, therefore, the longest continuous ministry in the New World. This particular Church consecrated in 1857, has three buildings on its historic site in the "Carpenter Gothic" style: the sanctuary (1857), the parsonage (1858), and the chapel (1863) located in the center of Rocky Hill's Historic District. Although mostly Dutch, German and Huguenot at the beginning, the Industrial Revolution brought new members from various backgrounds.

The sanctuary, with board and batten exterior, is the focal point architecturally and geographically of an exceptional historic district. This church appears to be the second oldest example of the style in NJ, and unique for the Reformed Church in America. Henry Laird, the designer/builder, was also noted for Nassau Hall in Princeton.
