Rockingham

Rockingham is believed to be the 2nd oldest house in the Millstone River Valley. The First section was built c 1710, and added to in the 1760's by John Berrien, a prominent State legislator and Superior Court Justice.

The house served as the final wartime headquarters for General George Washington, from late August to early November 1783, while Congress was meeting in Princeton. It was here that he wrote the Farewell Orders to the Armies, shortly before receiving word that the Treaty of Paris had been signed, formally ending the Revolutionary War.

The mansion is now a prominent living history museum, interpreted with a fine collection of antiques and reproductions of several of Washington's personal military
artifacts, replicated only for Rockingham.
