Horne House 941 Main Street Bridgewater, NJ Site Number: 20 Central Tour Weekend Events: ADA Accessable: Yes Normal Hours: Organization: |
The present Van Horne House, which dates to the late 18th century, was extensively remodeled in the middle decades of both the 19th and 20th centuries. The remodeling during the 1930s and 1940s was in the style of the Corporate Colonial Revival and is especially significant. This site on which the house sits, known as "Phil's Hill," or "Convivial Hill", was named after Phillip Van Horne, a Bridgewater merchant well-known for his hospitality to both sides during the Revolutionary War. It was the site of numerous important war-time events including a portion of the fighting during the Battle of Bound Brook, when British troops captured three American cannons on the front lawn. The house was used at various times by Generals Lincoln, Stirling, Lee, and Cornwallis. |
