Washington Rock

Its strategic location on top of the first Watchung Mountain made the rock a valuable lookout post during the Revolutionary War. In June 1777, General George Washington used the natural outcropping, with its thirty-mile panoramic view, to direct his troops against the British forces under the command of General William Howe.

The site, which became one of the New Jersey's first state parks, still offers visitors breathtaking views of New York City.
